Kharkiv is the second-largest city of Ukraine by its size and population. It is the biggest industrial, scientific and cultural center of the country. This city was founded in the 17th century (1654-1656). Till the turn of the 1930s, it was the capital of Ukraine. The population of the city numbers over 2 million people. There are about 500 architectural monuments, museums, theatres, and exhibition halls in Kharkiv. The underground railway (subway), whose architectural beauty yields; only to the Moscow one, is a peculiar thing among the sights of the city. Kharkiv is the biggest student city, as there are over 20, higher educational institutions in it. The Kharkiv National Medical University (KNMU) is one of the oldest higher educational establishments of Ukraine. It was founded in 1805 as the Medical Faculty of the Kharkiv University. At present, over 600 teachers work at the departments of the Kharkiv National Medical University (KNMU). Among them,122 professors and 236 Associate Professors, academic title of doctors and candidate of medical sciences are respectively 110 and 445 people. In the Kharkiv National Medical University (KNMU) is a member of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and two corresponding members of AMS of Ukraine,4 laureates of State Prize of Ukraine,18 distinguished scientists and engineers,8 distinguished doctors,2 Honored Worker of Education of Ukraine,37 full members of international and departmental academies science. Since 1951, the Kharkiv National Medical University (KNMU) has been training medical personnel for countries of Eastern Europe, China, and Mongolia, and since 1961 it has been training students from other countries of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. At present, there are about 1850 foreign students in the Kharkiv National Medical University (KNMU) who study at the Preparatory Department, Medical and Dental Faculties, undergo postgraduate and clinical post-graduate (residency) courses as well as professional probation at departments of the University in dentistry, therapy, orthopedics and traumatology, oncology, urology, psychiatry, ophthalmology, surgery, obstetrics, and gynecology, as well as other medical specialties. The Kharkiv National Medical University (KNMU) has trained over 5,000 specialists for 86 states of Europe, Asia, Latin America, Middle East countries. Among them, there are 3 Doctors and 70 Candidates of Medical Science, about 200 clinical post-graduates (residents). Particular attention is paid to clinical rounds of patients, their management, filling in, and arrangement of case histories with their subsequent analysis. Clinical and theoretical training of the students is performed at 66 departments of the Kharkiv National Medical University (KNMU) and the best clinics of Kharkiv with the use of modern medical diagnostic and therapeutical equipment, computed provision of the academic process, wide use of audio and video aids. The total area owned by the Kharkiv National Medical University (KNMU) is 114542 sq.m: within it, the area of study and laboratory premises is 57015 sq. m. The teaching area per one student is 15 sq.m. Other clinical bases used by the Kharkiv National Medical University (KNMU) are administered by the Government healthcare department.
